Founded by David M. Schuermann, AIA, and Joseph P. Hagan, AIA, Architecture, Incorporated is a Memphis-based firm with experience in commercial, institutional and residential architecture and planning. A great deal of our work these days is multi-family residential with an emphasis on Hope VI projects. We specialize in historic preservation, adaptive use, renovation/restoration and National Park Service (historic tax credit)-certified projects. We aren’t limited to region either. Our principals are collectively licensed in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The work we take on.
Our projects range from gargantuan to tiny, ancient to brand spanking new, commercial to residential. We have designed shopping centers and breakfast room additions — all with the same care and attention to detail. We think our diversity of project type and scope only strengthens our abilities to problem solve. It certainly makes us more creative with our design solutions. And we want to make sure you feel free to discuss your project, regardless of how big it is.
We transform existing spaces.
Architecture, Incorporated has a proven talent for renovation and adaptive-use projects. Whether you’re looking to convert a historic warehouse to condominiums or simply restore your home — chances are better than good that we have the experience in your project type.
We have converted an old tugboat to a restaurant, a storage facility to a recording studio, and a horse barn to a restaurant. We have restored historic antebellum mansions and small cottages. We think it’s important that modern amenities don’t have to conflict with historic accuracy. Many of our projects have been reviewed by historic zoning commissions as well as the National Park Service.
And we believe in budgets.
Realistic development goals are a necessity in making a project financially viable. We take the financial impact of every design decision seriously. We believe incorporating modern-life safety systems and accessibility standards can be achieved creatively and on a budget. We know this because we’ve done it. And we think designing not to waste dollars is essential to any good plan.
We don’t do work to win awards (that’s why they’re all the way down here). But we’ve been honored with more than a few from the fine folks below.
